8 Lunar New Year Gift Ideas from Asian-American Shops and Artists

This year, we’re excited to see that Lunar New Year is bigger than ever!

When we were kids, we remembered this being a lesser-known holiday. Now, it feels like everyone is joining in the celebrations for this upcoming Year of the Rabbit — and we’re so grateful for that.

To mark this very special holiday for us, we wanted to spotlight Lunar New Year gift ideas from a few independent Asian-American-owned shops and artists that we find inspiring.

1. Prosperity Snack Box

We have been a long-time fan of Té Company, a New York-based company that sources teas directly from small farmers in Taiwan. We love their Prosperity Snack Box, which looks scrumptiously perfect for bringing to a Lunar New Year gathering.

2. Lunar New Year 2023 Red Envelope

We are so charmed by Kai Kwong’s red envelope design, which playfully combines both Year of the Rabbit and Year of the Cat. For those who are unfamiliar, the Cat is the 4th animal in the Vietnamese zodiac, taking place of the Rabbit in the Chinese zodiac.

3. Empress Hot Sauce Taiwan Origins Gift Set

For lovers of spice, we’re eyeing this trio of delectable, naturally fermented hot sauces made in small batches. It’s carried by Yun Hai, a Taiwanese pantry shop that specializes in premium ingredients. More of a chili crisp fan? They’ve got that too.

4. Modern Tam Cúc Playing Cards

We love modern interpretations of cultural favorites. Designer and illustrator Clarissa Vu created this striking reimagining of a classic Vietnamese card game called “Tam Cúc”, which translates to “Three Chrysanthemums”. This game is traditionally played during Tết celebrations.

We think Sonya Lei’s Lunar Banquet poster, which features all the animals of the Chinese zodiac celebrating together, is so cute, no matter what year it is. We love its festive, happy spirit and cheery color palette — perfect for hanging on the wall.

6. Jade Rabbit Ceramic Incense Holder

Ok, it’s true — we can’t resist a cute bunny. This rabbit incense holder from the Olala Design Store looks so cozy and peaceful. Plus, we like that it comes with a box of fragrant sandalwood incense, so you can immediately fill your room with its relaxing vibe.
